‘Star Trek 3′ Reflects ‘Spirit of the TV Show,’ Simon Pegg Says – Variety

Rejoice, Trekkies! The latest sequel to the rebooted “Star Trek” franchise will capture the spirit of the original TV show.

Co-writer and star Simon Pegg told Comic Book Resources that “Star Trek 3,” whose script was recently completely overhauled, will have more familiar notes than the previous two films.

“I think we just want to take it forward with the spirit of the TV show,” Pegg told the site.

Pegg, who will return to play engineering chief Scotty, also said that the new film will be infused with the same optimism and sense of adventure that characterized the original stories.

“And it’s a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that’s where we want to take it, you know, where no man has gone before — where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a slighter more enlightened generation,” he said. “But yeah, that’s the mood at the moment.”

“Star Trek 3” has passed through the hands of several directors since the third installment was first announced. J.J. Abrams, who steered the first two ships, took a back seat as producer in order to take charge of the upcoming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” He passed the baton to writer-director Roberto Orci, who was later given the boot for “Fast Five’s” Justin Lin.

The film is slated for release in July 2016.

Star Trek rumor portends television series reboot – WTOP

WASHINGTON — In the galaxy of Star Trek fans, there is nothing that draws more speculation than a possible television series reboot. And so it happens, the Trekkie rumor mill is on warp speed with the news that two pilot ideas may be competing for the opportunity.

The geek pop webzine The Nerdist reported on Friday that two ideas for a new Star Trek television series — the first since Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled in 2005 — have been circulating for some time but were more or less shelved after the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie franchise took off. A new film Star Trek 3, will hit theaters this July.

The original Star Trek ran from 1966 to 1969, starring William Shatner as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nemoy, who died in March, as Mr. Spock. This short-lived but wildly popular show  launched a now legendary cross-generational fandom and cultural phenomenon, as well as several movies and popular TV spin offs, including the 90’s-era Star Trek: The Next Generation.

According to The Nerdist, the first pitch for a new series was developed by Babylon 5 (another spinoff) creator and comics writing legend J. Michael Straczynski and Dark Skies’ Bryce Zabel. This one would bring back the original Kirk/Spock/McCoy characters. The pitch can be read in full, here.

The other one is from novelist Geoffrey Thorne, X-Men’s Bryan Singer, Free Enterprise director Rob Burnett, and Usual Suspects writer Christopher McQuarrie, and called Star Trek: Federation. It is set far into the future of the United Federation of Planets, or “The Federation,” generations ahead of our favorite characters. Details of that pitch can be found here, and more to read at The Nerdist.

Comedian Will Ferrell belts out ‘Star Trek’ theme – CNET

While appearing this week on late-night talk show, “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” comedian and actor Will Ferrell revealed his singing talents after noting that he liked to start his stand-up routine in the geekiest way possible.

When asked if he did much stand-up work in his career, Ferrell quipped, “I tried a little bit; I tried for like a year and a half. I did a lot of ‘Star Trek’ material.”

“In fact, I would start my act by singing the theme to ‘Star Trek’ from beginning to end,” he added.

At Corden’s request, Ferrell entertains fellow guest and comedian Kevin Hart, as well as the audience, by singing the “Star Trek” operatic theme song from the original ’60s TV show — and yes, he even hit the high notes.

Logically, we were impressed.

‘Man Of Steel’ Star Henry Cavill Teams Up With ‘The Expendables 2′ Director … – KpopStarz

“Man of Steel” actor Henry Cavill has confirmed to be joining the cast of “Stratton,” which will be directed by “The Expendables 2″ director Simon West.

In another report, Gina Carano’s ex is reportedly perfect to replace Jamie Dornan for the role of Christian Grey in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” sequel, in the wake of reports that the sex scenes in the movie had upset his wife Amelia Warner.

“I’ve long wanted to tell a story about the British Special Forces, and finally the opportunity has come around,” said “Man of Steel” Henry Cavill to Variety.

“Duncan Falconer’s work is fantastic, and we are incredibly fortunate to be working with him so closely. We plan to convert the books to cinema as accurately as possible while keeping them topical. Simon West is a perfect match for this movie with his ability to marry storytelling and action, both of which are essential to do this project justice,” Gina Carano’s ex Henry Cavill of “Man of Steel” fame.

According to the magazine, the film “Stratton” is based on Duncan Falconer novels involving an operative for the Special Boat Service who is trying to take on a global terrorist cell operating across Europe and Central Asia.

Meanwhile, UK’s Mirror  listed the possible actors who would have the chops to play Christian Grey. But first, they need to fit a certain criteria.

The actor needs to “be handsome, happy to get naked, be charming, have ‘hidden darkness’ and finally “be willing to not quit after one film.”

“Superman himself obviously has the face, physique, and acting talent to play the famous character,” the publication said of Gina Carano’s ex Henry Cavill. “Cons: Might look a bit weird as a ginger?”

Nevertheless, there’s no confirmation yet on Jamie Dornan’s camp that he won’t reprise his role as Christian Grey on the sequel of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

This French dude is on a mission to make every Star Wars ship into a drone – Digital Trends

At this point, if you don’t know who Oliver C is, chances are pretty good that you’ve been living under a rock. Over the past couple months, this guy has won the heart of the Internet with his awe-inspiring, fully-functional, and totally badass replicas of popular Star Wars ships. And he’s showing no signs of stopping.

It all started back in February, when a video showcasing his custom-built Millennium Falcon drone went viral. Shortly thereafter, he built a Tie Interceptor drone. Now, he’s back with yet another hard-core creation — an RC Imperial Star Destroyer drone. This dude is on a roll.

Much like his previous Star Wars spacecrafts, Oliver’s Destroyer drone is constructed from a lightweight foam shell that slips onto the chassis of a Prophecy 335 — a carrier drone of the Frenchman’s own design. It’s a completely custom build, but as usual, Oliver C has posted the build instructions for both the drone and the foam shell online, so you can make one yourself if you’re not afraid of a little DIY legwork.

This isn’t likely the last we’ll see of Oliver either. He’s already posted pictures of the next ship he plans to build — the T-47 Airspeeder. You know, the one that Luke used to take out that AT-AT in the Battle of Hoth.

Apparently this guy isn’t going to stop until he’s made a flyable version of every Star Wars ship there is. At this point the only question is which one he’ll make next. The infamous X-Wing Starfighter, perhaps? The Lambda Shuttle? What about Boba Fett’s ship, the Slave I? Our money is on the last, but it’s really anyone’s guess.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Might Feature the Series’ First LGBT Character – ScreenCrush

With a new trilogy, two planned standalone films and a slew of new books hitting the shelves, the Star Wars universe is really expanding. We recently learned more details about some of those books as well as where they fit in on the Star Wars timeline, and now it appears that one of the new characters from an upcoming novel might make be making the jump to the big screen — and better yet: she’s the franchise’s first LGBT character.

The rumor originates over at Cinelinx, which was also the source of recent rumors that a live-action Star Wars TV series is being developed. As always, take this with your usual dosage of salt until it’s officially confirmed, but if true, this could be some majorly great news for the series.

The site reports that Moff Mors will be one of the characters featured in Star Wars: Rogue One following her debut in the upcoming novel Lords of the Sith. Mors is described as a very talented Imperial leader with a troubled past, who just happens to be a lesbian. The key words here are “just happens to be,” as her sexuality does not define her — nor should it.

Star Wars is such a rich universe, and big sci-fi concepts like this should allow for the inclusion of characters of all races and sexualities. Think about it: an advanced world filled with aliens and people of various shapes, sizes, genders and colors, where none of those surface qualities matter. Intergalactic, futuristic films provide us with limitless possibilities and often portray worlds more advanced than our own — which should allow for LGBT characters to also happily co-exist with no concern for their sexuality.

The Star Wars franchise attracts a similarly diverse fanbase, and all fans should be able to see themselves represented in the series, which is why the cast of The Force Awakens has been so exciting. More women and more people of color are always more interesting, and including an LGBT character is the next logical step.

Paul S. Kemp’s Lords of the Sith hits shelves on April 28. Star Wars: Rogue One hits theaters on December 16, 2016.

If you’re a huge “Star Wars” fan with Galactic Empire money just lying around, you may want to check out this $14.9 million (about £10 million, AU$19.2 million) mansion in the Los Angeles suburb of Westlake Village.

The house has several themed bedrooms, including an awesome “Star Wars” bedroom that whisks you away to the snowy world of Hoth, where Luke Skywalker cut open a Tauntaun for warmth and came face-to-face with a deadly Wampa. The bedroom looks like a snowy cave complete with fake snow on the ceiling, a mural on the wall featuring an Imperial probe droid, and a pretty sweet-looking airspeeder bed perfect for the pint-size “Star Wars” fans out there.

And if you somehow manage to get burnt out on “Star Wars,” the mega-mansion’s other themed rooms let you and your friends pretend to be a pirate, the host of a murder-filled dinner party, or a pool shark hustling your friends. TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions’ – Touch Arcade

The idea behind the TouchArcade Game of the Week is that every Friday afternoon we post the one game that came out this week that we think is worth giving a special nod to. Now, before anyone goes over-thinking this, it doesn’t necessarily mean our Game of the Week pick is the highest scoring game in a review, the game with the best graphics, or really any other quantifiable “best” thing. Instead, it’s more just us picking out the single game out of the week’s releases that we think is the most noteworthy, surprising, interesting, or really any other hard to describe quality that makes it worth having if you were just going to pick up one.

These picks might be controversial, and that’s OK. If you disagree with what we’ve chosen, let’s try to use the comments of these articles to have conversations about what game is your game of the week and why.

Without further ado…

Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions

There’s nothing like a surprise release to throw some excitement into our weekly new games routine, and it’s extra sweet when that surprise game also happens to be an excellent Star Wars tie-in game. I mean hey, licensed Star Wars video games don’t exactly have the best reputation, you know? But that’s not a concern with Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions [Free], a just-released action platformer based on the new Star Wars Rebels animated series that began last year and consists of several shorts, a movie, and a full season of shows that just wrapped up at the beginning of this month with a second season currently in progress.

Star Wars Rebels takes place between Episode III and IV of the main movie series, and so far has been quite well received from critics and fans alike. It deals with a small band of rebels who have united to fight back against the Empire on and around the planet Lothal. You start out the game as Ezra, a plucky young con artist with fledgling Force abilities. The main action in the game is pretty straightforward. You’ll run, jump and blast your way past hordes of Imperial enemies, collecting things like coins and special emblems, finding secrets, and helping out the citizens of Lothal.

Then there’s a whole second part to the game, which involves building out your home base on Lothal. As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock different building types and recruit citizens who are trying to escape the clutches of the Empire to come and live in your little sanctuary. The game’s currency that you collect while playing can go towards upgrading Ezra’s abilities, and together with building out your spot on Lothal, Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions is a collector’s dream come true.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Base building? In-game currency? This is just some fremium game!” Well I’m happy to say that that is not true at all. The game is free to download initially, and you can play through the first 4 (fairly lengthy) levels to get a feel for the game. Then, you’re given a variety of IAP unlocks which allow you to buy as much or as little of the full game as you want. It’s really a nice, flexible system for those that enjoy the initial demo, and best of all, no stupid timers! So if you like Star Wars, whether or not you’re currently into the Rebels series or not, you should definitely take Star Wars Rebels: Recon Mission for a spin.
