Dumb Move? Jim Carrey Exits Dumb and Dumber 2

Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber (1994) Movie ImageOr “Dumb and Dumber To”, as that’s apparently the official title for the upcoming sequel. The film was announced late last year, with word that both Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels would be returning for the second time-round. (New Line and the producers, along with the actors, are working under the premise that 2004′s direct-to-DVD sequel “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd” never happened.)

As with the original stars, the original directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly were also expected back for the sequel.

Well, it’s been almost eight months since that announcement, and apparently New Line is dragging their feet on the sequel, and Jim Carry is not pleased. The actor has now officially withdrawn from the project, reports ETOnline:

According to sources, Carrey grew increasingly frustrated by New Line and Warner Brothers, who he felt showed a lack of enthusiasm regarding the project.

A sentiment seemingly reinforced by a statement exclusively obtained when ETOnline reached out to the actor’s publicist for comment. In addition to confirming the story, Carrey exclusively tells ETOnline, “I would have thought Dumb and Dumber To was a no-brainer, after all it’s implied in the title.”

Hunh. Didn’t see that coming.

I’m not entirely sure if the lack of movement was a “dumb” move on the studio’s part, or on Jim Carrey’s fault for getting impatient and officially letting everyone know he’s now gone. I mean, do movie stars actually sit there waiting for something to happen? Usually actors like Carrey have a half dozen films in the pipeline at any given time, and they spend their time shuffling from set to set, doing whatever goes into production first. This might be the first time I’ve heard of an actor getting mad a movie didn’t go into production fast enough.

In any case, it’s curious the studio is so slow on this. I would think that a “Dumb and Dumber 2″ (or, er, “Dumb And Dumber To”) would have made quite the dent at the box office. Maybe New Line doesn’t feel the same way…
