Kick-Ass 2 Appears to Be Happening

Share

Looks like Kick-Ass 2 is really going to happen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal is in talks with Matthew Vaughn to produce and distribute the sequel to the 2010 hit which Jeff Wadlow will be directing. They’re planning to start lensing the movie in August of this year and not in the summer as comic book creator Mark Millar had been saying all this time.

Vaughn self-financed and directed the first Kick-Ass movie from a script he wrote with Jane Goldman. The movie was made for $30 million, but brought in a healthy return of $100 million at the worldwide box office and another $23 million in home video sales.

Vaughn wrote the script for the sequel, but since he’s busy with the X-Men: First Class sequel that’s shooting in January next year, he’ll be taking a producer role here.

The sequel will reportedly roll up the storyline in the Kick-Ass 2 comics with that of the Hit-Girl spin-off.

Deadline says discussions are underway with the primary cast members (Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse) to reprise their roles, and since they’re apparently not contracted for the sequel, new deals will have to be made.

Chloe Grace Moretz, who plays Hit-Girl, has a couple of movies in pre-production so getting her for the sequel may be problematic but it is something I’m sure Moretz’s people will work out with Universal’s people.

If the recent comments by the comic series illustrator John Romita Jr. is correct, Kick-Ass 2 already has a couple of people under contract, and the movie is scheduled for release sometime in May 2013.
