My condolences to the victims of the Dark Knight Rises shooting

Share

I’ve wrestled with this all day.

How do I address the shooting at a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colo.? How do I parse such a heinous crime connected with what was supposed to be a celebration of one of pop culture’s most enduring heroes? How do I dissect all the parallels that have inevitably popped up? The comparisons of the masked suspect to the masked terrorist Bane in the new Batman film? The comparisons of the suspect’s actions to a similar scene of a shooting in a “porn theater” in Frank Miller’s 1986 comic “The Dark Knight Returns”? The sickening reports of the suspect telling authorities he “was the Joker,” a reference to the classic Batman villain in the comic books and to the late Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the so-called Clown Prince of Crime in 2008′s “The Dark Knight”?

But all I keep coming back to is how much my heart hurts for those 12 killed and those dozens wounded. And how much this terrible act reminds me that life is a precious thing we can’t take for granted for even a second.

I feel I’d be remiss if I didn’t address this in some fashion here at Geek Speak. So please let me just express my deepest condolences to all the victims of this tragedy. I know I’m not alone in saying how much my thoughts and prayers go with them all.
